Web design
for artists.
Individual websites for artists, galleries and creative businesses, with careful attention to design, photography and presentation.
Designed around your work.
A website should give your work the space and attention it deserves.
I design and develop websites specifically for you rather than assembling them from a template. I pay close attention to how your work is presented, from image quality and colour to typography, spacing and the way artwork is arranged.
I look after the technical side, leaving you free to concentrate on your work.
Responsive design
Carefully considered layouts for phones, tablets and desktop screens.
Fast loading
Lightweight pages, appropriately sized images and efficient code.
Clear navigation
Thoughtful organisation so visitors can easily explore your work.
Search visibility
Sound technical SEO foundations and accessibility checks.
Bespoke, from the start.
Every project is different, so the quotation reflects your content, requirements and the work involved.
My bespoke websites are managed by me. If you need to make frequent updates yourself, Wix or Squarespace may be more suitable; I can also design and set up sites on those platforms.
Bespoke websites start from £1,500
Quoted individually according to scope.
A typical project may include
- Bespoke responsive design
- Home, Work, About and Contact pages
- Artwork galleries
- Contact form and privacy page
- Image sizing and web optimisation
- Basic SEO and accessibility checks
- Hosting and domain configuration assistance
- Testing and launch
You purchase hosting and domains directly from your chosen providers. I provide configuration and technical assistance; those provider charges are separate from my design fee.
Extensive photographic editing, substantial changes to the agreed design and additional features are discussed and quoted separately. Future updates and additional work are charged at £55 per hour.
A clear process, from first ideas to launch.
Agreeing the design direction and preparing the content early makes the whole project more efficient.
We'll discuss how you want your website to look, how the artwork should be organised and what visitors need to find. I'll review a representative selection of photographs before preparing a quotation.
Direction & content
Agree examples, structure, artwork selection and grouping, image presentation and the written material needed for the build.
Design & feedback
Review a working preview, which is not yet a finished website. Gather your comments together so refinements can be made consistently. Once the direction is agreed, I develop the remaining pages and arrange a further review.
Checks & publication
Check the finished content, layout and functionality before publication. The quotation will define the agreed scope and review stages.
Good images make a difference.
For artists and galleries, the photographs are often the most important part of a website.
Sharp, well lit, full resolution originals with simple backgrounds give the best results. I normally ask for files of at least 1,500 pixels on the longest side, preferably around 2,000 pixels where possible.
Included in a website project
Normal preparation of supplied images for the web, including appropriate sizing, responsive versions and optimisation.
- Preparing web friendly file formats
- Resizing and sensible cropping
- Consistent presentation within the page layout
Additional image work
More substantial corrections are available at £55 per hour and will be discussed before extra work begins.
- Extensive colour and exposure correction
- Removing or replacing backgrounds
- Extensive cropping or reconstruction
- Sorting large quantities of material
- Working with small or difficult source photographs
Useful to know.
A few things worth considering before you decide how your website should be built.
Can I update a bespoke website myself?
No. My bespoke managed websites don't have a content management system. You send updates to me and I make them for you. This can suit you if you prefer to concentrate on your work and need occasional updates.
What happens after the website launches?
I can make future updates, add new artwork and carry out technical changes. Ongoing support is agreed for each project. Content updates, image preparation and additional work are charged at £55 per hour; I'll let you know before a requested change becomes a larger piece of work.
What do I need to supply?
The most useful starting material is:
- An outline of the site, its purpose and the pages or sections you need
- Examples of websites you like and what appeals to you about them
- Your written content and a selected artwork list with titles
- A representative selection of original, full resolution photographs
- Whether you want to make your own future updates, and any additional requirements to discuss
When the selection is ready, please send images together in one batch, named to match their titles and grouped into folders for the relevant pages or series. I can help organise material if needed, with that work allowed for in the quotation.
I don't impose an arbitrary image limit: preparation and complexity matter as well as the number of photographs. Well prepared material helps keep the process efficient.
Can I change the design during development?
Reasonable refinements are part of the agreed review process. Significant changes to an approved direction, replacement material, substantial new content or extra functionality may require a revised quotation. We'll discuss this before additional work proceeds.
Do you offer Wix or Squarespace websites?
Yes. If you want to make frequent changes yourself and are comfortable with a visual editing system, I can design and set up a site on one of these platforms, then hand over day to day editing. Projects are quoted individually. You pay the platform subscription directly, separately from my design fee; it covers the builder, hosting and platform maintenance. You will need to learn the editing system, and any updates you ask me to make are charged separately.
Let's discuss your website.
You don't need to have every detail decided before getting in touch. Tell me a little about your work and what you have in mind.
